Sullivan County

A trace of the colorful history of Sullivan County in New York state can be heard in the names of some of its towns and waterways: Kiamesha, Mamakating, Ashokan. Land here's the thing, and it's been in demand since time immemorial when the Lenape and the Delaware and tribes of the Six Nation Indian Federation lived, fished, loved and died here, no doubt reveling in its natural beauty and rich cache of resources. European settlers found the land just as generous, building canals and tanneries, saw and gristmills, poultry and dairy farms from its vast supply of water and game, timber and stone, and acre after acre of tillable soil. Later came the tourist trade, beckoned by the coolness of the Catskill Mountains and their close proximity to New York City, a scant 90 miles away.

Land's still the thing today in Sullivan County and people continue to be drawn by its rural sensibility, small town hospitality and easy accessibility to things natural and sporting. Hundreds of lakes, rivers and streams mean fishing, swimming or boating are a moment away. Winter brings skiing, snowshoeing, and ice-skating to the hinterlands and numerous seasonal festivities in Sullivan Country's towns and hamlets. Year-round activities include horseback riding, hiking and antiquing.

With over 970 square miles of land and a southern border as close as two hours drive from New York City, Sullivan Country has much to offer those in search of a weekend home. While real estate prices in all of New York continue to rise, Sullivan County is still considered affordable. And the relaxed pace inherent to Sullivan County living is a big appeal to the average harried New Yorker who would rather get away from it all than dress up and be seen.
