A restaurant, diner, or café often becomes an unofficial small-town meeting spot. Sometimes it seems as though the whole world passes through its front doors on a daily basis, and young and old alike can while away the hours and catch up on local news over neighborly conversation and fresh-brewed coffee and a slice of pie or cake. A friendly, accessible place like this was just what Randy Florke had in mind when he opened the Kitchen two years ago. A homes kitchen is the lively heart of the house, Randy explains, and I wanted my restaurant to reflect that feeling. The kitchen serves what he calls country comfort food old fashioned favorites like fried chicken, meat loaf, and fresh-baked pies and cakes. Here, a collection of recipes some inspired by, others borrowed directly from the Kitchenthat offers comforting meals, that make you feel right at home.
